Day 2 Split

In AD 305, the world’s most powerful man, Emperor Diocletian, was faced with the decision on where to spend the rest of his days. Of all of the known world in those times, he chose to build his home in the heart of the region of Dalmatia, setting the first stones in place for the future city of Split, the Diocletian’s Palace. The palace gradually became more like a city within a city, as more and more was added to it. As it stands today, the ruins comprise a mix of architectural styles, with influences harking back to the Roman Empire, as well as the Middle Ages, Gothic and baroque periods. We start with a tour of the substructures to discover how life in the palace was organized during the Middle Ages while wandering through the labyrinth of tunnels then the Peristyle Square, at the heart of the palace complex and the Cathedral of St Doimnus and the nearby Temple of Jupiter, the gates that once served as entranceways to the palace itself and much more…

After a short ride, we reach the ancient Salona that lies in the heart of Solin and was once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

It is the largest archaeological park in Croatia, whose size is attested by the monumental ramparts with towers and gates, a forum with temples, an amphitheater and cemeteries with Salonian martyrs (Manastirine, Kapljuc, Marusinac). Salona was a town with over 60.000 inhabitants and, according to the legend, the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian.

Return by coach to Split.

Day 4 Split- Mostar & Medugorje, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Tip: Good walking shoes recommended

We'll begin very early our journey to Bosnia and Herzegovina and after crossing the border, on our way to ancient Ottoman city of Mostar we will stop in the walled town of Pocitelj, a place that will intrigue you even more to discover the history of the Ottoman city of Mostar. In Mostar we will be introduced to the great history of this city known as “the window to the Orient”. We'll visit the Old Bazaar, full of picturesque shops and craft workshops, and the Mosque. Afterwards, we'll enjoy a walk along the famous UNESCO - protected Old bridge from the 16th C. After some free time, we will taste some authentic Bosnian specialties and then it's off to experience the beauty of Bosnia and Herzegovina on our way to our final destination, one of the most-visited pilgrimage centers in all of Europe - Medjugorje. The most compelling site here is the Mount of Appearance where Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared to children in 1981 for the first time and ever since Medugorje has become a world-wide destination for pilgrims. After this beautiful experience, we will drive back to Split.

Day 5 Split - Ston – Dubrovnik

Today we leave Split in direction of the south by the A1 highway. We will come down from the highway and pass through the impressive delta of the Neretva river, well-known for the mandarin production, before briefly passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina and reaching the cities of Mali Ston and Ston (aka Salt City). The Bay of Ston region is renowned for 2 things: the monumental defensive system constructed by the Republic of Dubrovnik with the second largest walls in Europe and the tradition of oyster (and mussels) farming for more than 500 years. For those who are willing to, a city to city walk along the walls from Mali Ston to Ston allows a stunning view on both Mali Ston and Ston.

We briefly board our mini-coach to reach our next stop and enjoy local delicacies at the Bella Vista restaurant overlooking the magnificent Prapratno bay. After lunch we continue towards Dubrovnik with the coastal route and admire the panorama of the Elafiti islands.

Upon arrival at the Pearl of the Adriatic (Dubrovnik’s well deserved title), we will visit the old city center including the Pile Gate, Big Onofrio´s Fountain, Roland's Column, Bell Tower, Placa Stradun, Dominican Monastery, Franciscan Monastery and Rector's Palace.

Later on we head on for Kotor the main city of the bay, surrounded by a 4,5 km (2.8 miles) long system of defensive walls. We’ll enjoy our first Montenegrin lunch before discovering the impressive UNESCO site and among other the cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the Maritime Museum, Saint Luke as well as Saint Nicholas and Saint Mary Churches.
